Choix de Chansons: a digital critical edition

This fully digitised edition of Jean-Benjamin de Laborde’s 1773 luxury songbook allows you to explore images, music, and text from the original eighteenth-century publication. There are 100 ‘Song Sets‘ to explore in total. Each Song Set has five printed pages in the original publication: an illustration, title page, and three pages of music. Our digital edition is richly annotated with metadata. You can look at illustrations and scores, listen to recordings of the music, and learn about the people who designed the illustrations, composed the music, and wrote the lyrics. If you’d like to browse digital versions of the original books, you can also use the ‘Cover to Cover‘ viewer. You can also learn more ‘About‘ this digital publication and the ‘Team‘ behind it. Hover your cursor on the ‘Browse’ tab above right to discover more ways to explore this site.

This critical edition also includes articles (see below), videos of academic papers from a symposium, documentation of an exhibition in the Project Space of the School of Art and Design Gallery, Australian National University, and two concerts: one recorded at the Australian National University in 2023, and a second recorded at the State Library of New South Wales in 2024.
